I’ve been thinking a lot about this lately and was curious to see from those in our community what unique gigs/jobs or projects you’ve had come up. I don’t always find context to bring it up so I thought it’d be interesting to have a thread where we could all share these experiences.
For the past year, I’ve been working a pretty unique part time gig. I am one of four audio engineers at a recording facility that is part of the local library system. We teach classes, organize events for local audio enthusiasts, and record local artists/talent. I was brought onboard for my background in audio post / sound design etc.
I don’t know if you’d call this unique, but it’s certainly something I never expected to be doing. I was asked to produce beds for a hypnotist to use in sessions with clients to contribute to a meditative atmosphere.
I was also asked to produce little buzz sounds at regular intervals for someone to play on their MP3 player as they worked on a rowing machine so that they could keep time.
Probably one of the most unique experiences I’ve had was working for a music app company that was trying to create a new A/V collaborative platform where users could collaborate endlessly with the hopes of evolving pieces of music. I was their in house A/V engineer and we would also upload music to the app to populate it with music that users could then play along with. One of the acts I got to record was the Kodo Drummers, the afternoon before their gig. It was amazing to hear the taiko drums shake the concert hall and see the sheer physicality of drummers’ performance in what was as good as a private concert!
