sounds that affect and inspire you

I noticed in another thread how I commented that the distant whining drones of certain vehicles used to unsettle me as a child and someone else replied that it comforted them. Were there particular sounds that affected you positively or negatively as a child? Are there still sounds that produce an unusually powerful reaction in you? Does this fuel your creativity?

My childhood fear of certain distant traffic noises has certainly encouraged me to exploit their pitch envelopes as a sound designer. Similarly, I am fascinated and sometimes unsettled by the sound of passing trains. Each one sounds different and the sound is so complex, full of drones, whooshes, screeches and the like. I often think that the sound of a high speed long train must be what hell sounds like – a chaotic din full of dark elements. I use train sounds as source material for sinister effects as well and it works pretty well.

I noticed that there is one type of sound that unsettles me, and I discovered it whilst watching Mr Robot. It’s loud, sudden banging on doors. Even if I know it’s coming, it still unsettles me to no end.
