Question about Recording Surround Athmo with four large diaphragm microphones

Hey People!

Does anybody have any experience with recording surroundings with 4 microphones? I want to make recordings for quadrophonic sound.

I want to do that and i only have 4 large diaphragm microphones (Audiotechnica 2050) so its not a question about which equipment would be better, i am just wondering which mic-placement would be the best.

I tried a double-ORTF somehow but i don’t know if there is not something better…

I would be so grateful for any advice.

Thank you! 🙂

There are a few other alternatives that you may want to explore:

  1. Double MS extends to general MS model to include a rear image as well as the frontal image (
  2. Surround Ambience Microphones (SAM), also know as IRT cross or a Theile cross, works well for quadrophonic output (
  3. Ideal Cardioid Arrangment (ICA) works well for surround sound output (Artikel V6 englisch V2_0 mit Bildern – Gearslutz)

Further details on all of these techniques (and many more) can be found in Eargle’s The Microphone Book: Mono to Stereo to Surround (

Since that mic is a multi pattern microphone, you could actually create a ambisonic recording with them!
