I know gear topics can tend to get out of hand pretty quickly, but I am in need of a portable recorder, and I am not really aware what is on the market. I am interested in something that I could use different microphones with, and the Zoom H6 has peaked my interest due to the cost. Has anyone had any experience with zoom’s shotgun mic?
As with any gear decision, budget will dictate your choices. Any entry level piece of kit is going to have it’s pros and cons, so there’s no perfect suggestion, but the H6 is well regarded. So I’d suggest getting it, using it to it’s absolute limit, and then making your next purchase based on where you feel the H6 is letting you down in your recording workflow. Happy hunting!
I didn’t use Zoom recorder but i had deal with Tascam DR 44 (similar to Zoom H4n) and then upgrade to Tascam DR100 mk3 (~400$) and this was really significant upgrade! As i know Zoom H6 in similar price range but has slightly “hissy” mic pres. If you pick Zoom for it’s modular construction then ok, it’s good. But if you seek for better pres and A/D converters then i’ll recomend you to look at Tascam.
Hope this help =)
I’ve been using the H6 for a couple of months and absolutely love it. I’ve recorded around 1000 sounds with the shotgun mic, and it has worked perfect every time. Just took a while to get the levels right (which are adjustable with a dial on the base of the mic).
I’ve also used the H6 for recording ambiences and other sounds with both the omni and XY mics. Again, great once you get the right gain setting. Outside ambiences were recorded with the H6 mounted to a tripod, with optional wind protector and Sony MDR headphones for monitoring.
