I often have to convert sample rates or file formats of huge amounts of sound effects from one type to another. What is your favourite batch audio file converter? For a long time I’ve used Barbabatch, but that hasn’t been updated in ages with modern formats. I also use Soundminer’s mirror function at times or SoundConverter.
What app do you like? Bonus points if works with FLAC or other open formats.
I’ve been hearing good things about Myriad from Audiofile Engineering.
Soundminer does everything I need: https://www.avosound.com/en/sound-archive-management/soundminer/v4-pro
The Soundminer Mirror function is just one of several way’s to convert audio files. But the Mirror tool is acctualy designed to transfer audio files in whatever format you need: flac, wav, aif, poly, split… 44100 up to 192k… from single audio files up to entire libraries. Even AAF is supported see below, and the Mirror Tool let’s you decide a lot of options when converting.
I wrote a litte text about converting multichannel wav files with more than 8 channels into the flac file format with the soundminer mirror tool. Flac multichannel is up to 8 channels only but there is a trick: https://www.avosound.com/en/news/soundminer-trick-how-to-convert-audio-files-with-more-than-8-channels-into-flac-lossless
If someone works with Media Composer, Soundminer can transfer files into AAF. This is the only way at the moment to keep the metadatas in the files when working with Media Composer.
There are also cheeper options than V4 Pro when thinking about using Soundminer software. Soundminer HD Plus is smaller and can also do a lot of things. Ask for a trial!
To add even more options :
The batch file/item converter in Reaper should do exactly what you want but if you prefer dedicated applications you can try Myriad on macOS or AudioBot on Windows. SoX is also a great open source alternative (the sample rate converter is particularly renowned) but this is for people who love the command line.
Wavelab. Super solid for me when converting thousands of speech files on EA’s NHL game and in my own work with sfx and music for games. Great renaming functions and also batches sessions too which is pretty helpful. Haven’t done much work with FLAC but it should support it. I’ve also used Awave Studio when needing to convert more unique formats (around 300 supported). Awave isn’t cross-platform but might run under Wine on the Mac.
