I’ve been working on a fairly big Ambience library. I’m finishing up on the editing soon and am making selections for the library.
It will consist of a large amount of city ambiences (long takes) amongst others.
I have recorded most ambiences/atmospheres with a double mic setup (AB (dpa4060’s) and MS (MKH50/30)).
The idea was to have a backup and a choice in post production of the library.
Listening to both setups I’ve come to the conclusion I like the sound of both setups (for each their own reasons).
I’m thinking about releasing them as ‘Dual Perspective’ takes, to clarify the overlap in naming, ie:
CITY Backstreet chaotic with close voices, honking traffic passing slowly through crowd, Dual Perspective Morning Static AB.wav
CITY Backstreet chaotic with close voices, honking traffic passing slowly through crowd, Dual Perspective Morning Static MS.wav
(where city will be replaced by actual cityname)
My question is this: If the recordings have a similar perspective of the ambience, are you interested in both recordings?
And if not which would you prefer? AB or MS, and why?
And regarding the actual metadata, do you like mic setup in the filename or as a metadata tag in soundminer?
Absolutely! All the libraries I have only have ambiences from one perspective and it’s usually a static one, which faces pedestrians and traffic as they pass, which makes little sense in a scene with any movement down a street.
An ambience which actually involves slow movement would be cool and, at least as far as my SFX collection is concerned, a first.
Everyone has their own preferences and for my $0.05 I think about how someone will actually use the sounds when cutting ambiences etc… ie do it how you would want to use them…
But to actually answer part of your questions, to me spaced omni sounds very different to MS or ORTF (being omni they pick up everything, so tend to be both busier/more active and often brighter) which is why I always include both – you simply never know what context the sounds will be used in and accordingly which might be the best choice… re metadata, not everyone uses SM or Basehead or any lib app at all (eg picture editor) so if the info is important (like mic used) I would include it in the filename as well as in metadata….
