Does anybody have any experience with recording surroundings with 4 microphones? I want to make recordings for quadrophonic sound.
I want to do that and i only have 4 large diaphragm microphones (Audiotechnica 2050) so its not a question about which equipment would be better, i am just wondering which mic-placement would be the best.
I tried a double-ORTF somehow but i don’t know if there is not something better…
I would be so grateful for any advice.
Thank you! 🙂
There are a few other alternatives that you may want to explore:
- Double MS extends to general MS model to include a rear image as well as the frontal image (http://www.cinesonics.pt/Locmat/Manuais/Schoeps_DoubleMS_Paper_small.pdf)
- Surround Ambience Microphones (SAM), also know as IRT cross or a Theile cross, works well for quadrophonic output (http://www.live-production.tv/case-studies/concerts/surround-setups-schoeps.html#paragraph-title-11488)
- Ideal Cardioid Arrangment (ICA) works well for surround sound output (Artikel V6 englisch V2_0 mit Bildern – Gearslutz)
Further details on all of these techniques (and many more) can be found in Eargle’s The Microphone Book: Mono to Stereo to Surround (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Eargles-Microphone-Book-Application-Engineering/dp/0240820754/ref=dp_ob_title_bk)
